Controlling Your Speed
You must operate your snowmobile at a reasonable, prudent speed, taking into consideration weather conditions as well as trail conditions, traffic, and hazards. Trails will sometimes deteriorate over a day of normal snowmobile traffic. A safe speed early in the day on a smooth trail may not be safe later in the day on the same trail, as it could become more rough, which would require a slower speed to maintain control.
The maximum speed limit on state lands is 35 mph.
A frozen lake is considered a public highway. While no part of the VAST trail system is on frozen bodies of water, be sure to comply with all applicable rules and regulations if venturing onto frozen waterways.
You must obey posted speed limits if operating on public roads that are open to snowmobile traffic.
